To keep invoices and payments in order, I'd recommend setting up a separate business account as a priority. The bank you choose is likely to book you an appointment with one of their business managers and they'll simply require a few things to get you set up, including: a letterhead with your logo, business name and address; photo ID such as a driver's licence or passport and proof of address. And that should pretty much get you started. If you're a limited company they may need to see additional documents.
Accounts & Book-Keeping

One of the most important aspects of running any business is the accounts, so set up a financial record-keeping system immediately. Keep records of all of your invoices and payments at the end of every month. Make sure you file these properly to save yourself any hassle further down the line. When sorting my own invoices, I save Word documents or PDFs like this: '123_01_11 Client name.doc' under a file called 'Accounts'. So this has the Invoice Number; then the month/year and then the client name. This is a great way to keep everything in the right order and easy to access at any time.

Next, find a decent accountant. They'll cost you money at the end of each financial year but they'll be a life saver when it comes to organising your taxes. When it's time to sort your tax, simply print out all of your invoices from that financial year and put together all of your bank statements. Don't forget to include receipts, payments and any other business costs or overheads, including travel. And it's important you place your logo/business name on all official documents and stationery.
Taxes, NI and VAT

In terms of making things official, you'll have to register as self-employed with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) if you're a sole trader and you'll be expected to pay income tax and National Insurance contributions. Or if you're limited company, you must tell HMRC if it's liable for Corporation Tax, pay any Corporation Tax due and file a Company Tax Return on time. If in doubt, check out the HMRC website. Or just get your accountant to sort all of this for you.

With so much focus on finding or keeping jobs in this economy, one significant employment factor seems to get moved down the pros-and-cons chart: What kind of boss will my next supervisor be?

Interviewing with a human-relations specialist; meeting folks up and down the line; putting your best foot forward while they are all doing the same- the process may not present a completely accurate picture of the day-to-day environment.

Bosses know the importance of a good hire. Assuming the best candidate has accepted the offer, and has shown up on time for a few weeks, does the boss realize how critical retaining that new employee is? Does the boss know how to be a good boss?

In short, will the boss be a buddy or a bully?

The late, great basketball coach John Wooden shared his coaching philosophy that works just as well in business when it comes to mentoring employees: "A coach's primary function should not be to make better players but to make better people. Lift others even with your critical analysis. This is still the best method to get the best out of someone because pride is a better motivator than fear. I never wanted to teach through fear, punishment, or intimidation."

Bosses have tremendous power over those they supervise. Employees understand that the person they report to -- whether it's the owner of the company or a middle manager -- can be their biggest cheerleader or their worst nightmare.

I prefer to think that the people I have hired put me in the first category. Having made a significant investment of time in hiring them in the first place, I must have recognized the sort of talent, personality and energy that would improve our company.

I want the folks I hire to love their jobs enough to come back raring to go after a lousy day, because everyone has a lousy day once in a while. I want them to look to me for inspiration. I want them to respect my work ethic. I want them to want to get better at what they do. I want them to know that I will help them get better. I want them to learn from my example, even when I am not directly mentoring them.

Of course, none of that happens unless I know how to come back revved up after a miserable day, demonstrate a stellar work ethic, and keep improving myself. What goes around comes around.

Study after study has concluded that the most important factor in job satisfaction is a positive work environment. Praise is vital, and salary is important, but nothing ranks as high as loving what you do. Location matters, but people are willing to go great distances for a job that makes them happy. Titles aren't even near the top of the list.

The determining factor is often closely related to the boss. A truly great boss will engender loyalty before any of those other factors will. A committed boss works hardest at positive leadership and a professional environment. A perceptive boss remembers her own early challenges and draws on those experiences. A responsible boss understands that mentoring his staff and helping them develop skills reflects positively on him.

Some months back, I wrote a column about the TV program "Undercover Boss." I admire the bosses who concealed their identities and went to work on the front lines for some "real world" lessons about their companies. They were quite courageous to expose their own weaknesses on national television. But the exercise resulted in enhanced awareness of the importance of every single employee.

If you dare, try that experiment in your organization. You likely cannot be anonymous, but working side-by-side with staff, reinforcing that you won't ask them to do anything that you wouldn't ask of yourself, demonstrates your understanding of their challenges.

If all this sounds too overwhelming, step back and examine your motives. Are you ready to let someone else have a share in the glory? Are you willing to listen to options? Are you threatened by others' successes? Can you take responsibility for failure?

Many bosses get promoted without any formal leadership training. A good boss learns quickly from employees that Wooden's advice will serve them better than a superior attitude.

Now here's the most important piece of boss advice I will ever give you: Your employees don't really work for you. They work for your customers. Customers are their real bosses. And yours, too.

Are you a student who loves science? Do you have a good idea for an experiment that you’d like to share with the world? In 1996, two young computer science students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, had a hypothesis that there was a better way to find information on the web. They did their research, tested their theories and built a search engine which (eventually) changed the way people found information online. Larry and Sergey were fortunate to be able to get their idea in front of lots of people. But how many ideas are lost because people don’t have the right forum for their talents to be discovered? We believe that science can change the world—and one way to encourage that is to celebrate and champion young scientific talent as we do athletes and pop idols.

To help make today’s young scientists the rock stars of tomorrow, in partnership with CERN, The LEGO Group, National Geographic and Scientific American, we’re introducing the first global online science competition: the Google Science Fair. It’s open to students around the world who are between the ages of 13-18. All you need is access to a computer, the Internet and a web browser.

You may have participated in local or regional science fairs where you had to be in the same physical space to compete with kids in your area. Now any student with an idea can participate from anywhere, and share their idea with the world. You build and submit your project—either by yourself or in a team of up to three—entirely online. 1. Include a call to action at the end of each video.

What do you want your audience to do after watching the video? Take advantage of your product or service promotion? Visit your website? Call your toll-free number? Whatever it is, don't forget to suggest a next step to your audience.
2. Shoot brief, high-definition, widescreen videos.

YouTube has evolved from the slightly grainy videos of yesterday. To put your best face forward, post high-definition videos in widescreen format. YouTube has a page explaining the best formatting options for video uploads. In a nutshell, here are some formatting recommendations to follow:

* HD quality video with 16:9 aspect ratio
* MP4 video file format with .H264 compression
* MP3 or AAC audio compression
* 30 frames per second

Also, keep videos to 2 minutes or less in length. Viewership tends to drop off in videos longer than that, unless they're extremely compelling.
3. Find potential keywords for videos by typing them into YouTube's search box.

As with Google's keyword suggest tool, as soon as you begin typing a query in YouTube's search box, YouTube (which Google owns) offers suggestions. Type "silly pet," for instance, and YouTube will complete your query with suggestions such as "silly pets," "silly pet tricks," and "silly pet videos."

YouTube's suggestions give you an idea of which terms people use more frequently in video searches at the site. Though identifying popular keywords is important, keep in mind that there may be a lot more competition for these terms, too.
4. Perform a search using your intended keyword phrases on YouTube.

Once you have some keyword ideas, use them in searches on YouTube. This will give you an idea of what the competition is like for those terms. You can customize your search results to sort by relevance, upload date, view count and rating. Limit your searches to specific categories (such as People & Blogs).
5. Place your most important keyword phrase in your title, description and tags.

As with any SEO effort, make sure your target keyword phrase is included at the beginning of your video's title, in the description, and in the tags. Use the entire allowed space for your description, too, and make it as compelling as possible. The goal is to get people to decide to view your video from among all the other choices in the search results.

Keep your video titles within 65 characters, if possible (including spaces and punctuation). Titles longer than that get clipped in search results.

While your YouTube video description can be up to about 5,000 characters, only the first 140 characters will be displayed in YouTube search results. Make sure to put your keyword phrase within the first 140 characters, to reinforce the phrase and encourage click-throughs. And try to fill the entire 5,000 character description with good, keyword-rich details (without resorting to keyword stuffing).
6. Check the analytics of videos similar to yours.

In many cases, you can see the keywords, URLs, and related videos viewers used to find a video, as well as view a graph showing viewership over time. You can also see which audience demographics the video is most popular with, though this being YouTube, it's usually males aged 13 to 17. Bottom line: Other people's video analytics may give you ideas for keywords to use for your own videos.

To view the analytics, click the button to the right of the thumbs down button under the video. Keep in mind some people who post videos to YouTube don't allow their analytics to be viewed by others.

Of course, you should also monitor your own video's analytics. If the metrics YouTube offers aren't enough, consider third-party tools like VOOT (Video Online Optimization Tracker), a new service currently in private beta.
7. Add captions to your videos.

YouTube offers the option to add captions to videos. YouTube, Google and other search engines index captions and use them to help decide if a video is relevant to a query. As the video's owner, you have the option of uploading your own caption or letting YouTube automatically generate one -- though the results may not be completely accurate. Check out YouTube's page on how to add and edit captions for more information.
8. Relate your videos to each other.

Research shows that YouTube users tend to watch batches of videos per visit. So make sure your videos are clearly linked, to encourage multiple viewings. Aside from using similar tags, you could also use a series title for multiple videos in the same vein, such as "Silly Pet Tricks: Dog vs. Cat Smackdown," "Silly Pet Tricks: Dog Does Yoga, Drives Car," and so on. You could also post a new video as a response to an older one.
9. Share your video socially as soon as it's posted.

As soon as you post a new video, use YouTube's Share option to add it to your Facebook profile or business page, tweet about it, and so on. Also embed the video on your blog with a post that describes it -- and be sure to use your target keywords.

Maybe it’s just a novel idea on my part, but lately I have been thinking about the possibilities the social sphere could provide towards the improvement of political communications – or the damage it could cause.

I stumbled across a that talked about the implications of social media gone awry in Britain. On March 22, the Conservative Party in the U.K. launched an agressive Twitter campaign against Prime Minister Gordon Brown, using the hashtag “#cashgordon.” Below is a graph compiled by that shows the trend of the hashtag.

As it turns out, the idea was jacked from a U.S. website run by an anti-healthcare lobbyist. Just as the campaign began to peak, it was discovered by the U.K.’s Liberal Party supporters, who in-turn used the same hashtag to the effect that the website was taken offline.

A shining example of social media implementation was during Barack Obama’s run for the U.S. Presidency. His team helped developed a grassroots strategy; they were very successful in spreading their message across the web using Twitter and other social channels. The result: an Obama victory. This helped create a massive following, which further aided with fundraising and as a barrier against opponent mudslinging.

It is the responsibility of the client to ensure that all creative content comply with all relevant legal requirements, codes of practice, do not infringe any intellectual property rights, do not contain any defamatory material and do not infringe or contravene the rights of any third person.

5. Intellectual Property Rights

Client warrants that it is the owner of or has the permission from the respective owners to use, the trademarks, copyright, images, logos, product specifications, etc., (hereinafter ‘Promotional Material’) of the various services that are subject of this agreement. Client authorizes the company to use such Promotional materials for the purposes of this agreement.

6. Liability:

Company shall not be liable for the keywords, contents, designs and other creative provided by the client. Company shall not be liable in any manner whatsoever for any content, proprietary rights, material etc. provided by the client and/or for any services including but not limited to any content, material, design etc. developed by Company on the instructions of the client. Company shall not be liable for any compliance related issues of the website of the client.

7. Indemnity

The client hereby expressly agrees to defend, at its own expense, and indemnify and hold harmless Company, and its affiliates, directors, officers, employees and agents from and against any liability, claims, suits, damages, and expenses asserted against or incurred, arising out of or relating the use and/or infringement of such images, trademarks and other intellectual property rights or promotional material, while doing its responsibilities/work under this Agreement or from the non-compliant websites, contents, material or any incorrect information given to Company by the Client or from any act/omission of the Client.

8. Warranty

Company disclaims all warranties in relation to the provisioning of services under this agreement not mentioned herein. Company will endeavor to but does not warrant that the services will achieve the intended result expected from the services.

9. Excused Performance

Neither Company nor Client shall be deemed to be in default of this Agreement or be liable for any delay or failure in performance resulting directly or indirectly from any act of God, civil or military authority, civil disturbance, war, strike, fire, earthquake or other cause beyond its control.

10. Disputes:

Both parties agree to and shall endeavor to resolve any query/dispute informally within seven days of the occurrence of such query/dispute. In the event of dispute not being resolved informally within seven days of reference, Parties may refer the dispute to the Courts of New Delhi as mentioned under “Law and Jurisdiction” clause below.

11. Suspension

In the event of any dispute both the parties reserve the right to suspend this Agreement till the resolution of the said dispute.

12. Termination:

12.1 Company can terminate this agreement during the term without any cause by giving seven (7) days prior written notice to the client.

12.2 Client can terminate this agreement during the term without any cause by giving thirty (30) days prior written notice to the Company.

12.3 Either party can terminate the agreement forthwith by giving a written notice to the other, if:

Ø The other party commits a material breach of the terms of this agreement;

Ø The other party fails to perform its obligations under the agreement;

Ø The other party becomes insolvent, or an administrator or receiver is appointed to manage its debts, or it makes an arrangement with its creditors to settle its debts;

Ø If the services are not provided under this agreement for a continuous period of 30 days due a Force Majeure event, including, an act of God, civil or military disturbance, war, strike, fire, earthquake or other cause beyond a party's control.

12.4 Effect of Termination

Upon termination of this agreement for any reason whatsoever

any outstanding payments under this agreement to Company for the provision of the Services will become immediately due and payable; and
Each Party shall remain liable for its respective obligations that accrued prior to the date of such termination.
Company shall provide the agreed services to the client for that particular month for which the payment has already been received by the company.

13. Non- Exclusivity

This Agreement is non-exclusive and does not, (a) prohibit either party from entering into similar or different services with any other Party; or (b) prohibit either party from itself independently providing, developing, or otherwise acquiring identical, similar or different products, services and technologies.

14. General:

14.1 Each party shall only be entitled to assign the benefit of this Agreement with the written consent of the other (such consent not to be unreasonably delayed or withheld).

14.2 Each party hereto undertakes to the other that it shall keep, and shall procure that its directors and employees shall keep secret and confidential and shall not use or disclose to any other person any information or material of a technical or business nature relating in any manner to the business, products or services of the other party which the first party may receive or obtain in connection with or incidental to performance of this Agreement (Confidential Information). Any proprietary information disclosed by one party to the other will remain the property of the disclosing party.

14.3 Nothing in this Agreement shall be construed as constituting a partnership or joint venture between the parties.

14.4 Both the parties understand and agree that they can disclose about their business relationship in press releases, blogs, articles etc.

15. Law and Jurisdiction

The question I would like to answer today is: ‘How valuable is it to build links to your sites deep pages?’

The whole issue could be summed up with 1 one sentence: It is VERY valuable to build links to deep pages on your site. Let’s explore why.

Think of your site as a large dam with many tributaries feeding water into it constantly. The tributaries represent all the links pointing to your home page, whether from internal or external links. Your home page is the dam. It is the largest and most popular place for people to link to your site, and therefore usually holds the most weight in the search engines. For the purposes of this analogy, let’s say that when the dam releases some water each month, that water then filters out into the surrounding country, eventually making its way back into the tributaries that feed the dam itself (internal links). It’s a big circle. That is how page rank gets distributed on your site. Your home page has a lot of ‘link juice’ pointing at it. That link juice eventually finds it’s way to some of the inner pages on your site, but probably won’t get to all the pages on your site unless you’ve only got just a few pages one level from the home page.

So again, why is it valuable to build links to your inner pages (a part of the system of tributaries pointing to the dam) if the home page (dam) of your site will always be the biggest source of traffic and links? Because with larger tributaries feeding it, the dam (your home page) will grow at a faster rate, which will then release more water (page rank/organic ranking) to the surrounding country on a faster schedule, which will, in turn, feed more water into all the tributaries of the dam, not just the one tributary being built up at the time.

If all that is too confusing, here’s a real world example:

I have 10 deep pages on my site each targeting a specific keyword. I build 10 links to each of those pages. Since these pages are created in my site template, they all include links back to the home page of my site. So I just got 10 links to my home page, from inner pages on my site that are each getting links themselves. So the inner pages benefit from the links I’m building externally, and if I link to them from the home page as well, they get the added benefit of the strength of my home page too. This creates one big circle of links to deep pages, which link to the home page, and the home page, in turn, links to these deep pages.

One thing to note is that most of the time, you don’t get a choice of getting a deep link vs. a home page link and most sites will only link to your home page anyway. Being involved in SEO and marketing in general, I am usually bombarded by family members and friends with questions about marketing their website or their future website on the Internet. Because of this and my willingness to help just about anyone I know, you can usually find me in a small dark corner at a family party (it has to be small and dark because my wife gets ticked when I’m not up and socializing with everyone), on the phone in the car, or answering an email, Facebook message, or Twitter message about SEO and other internet marketing tactics.

I was on a call yesterday with one of my best friends from high school. Our conversation was focused on general search engine optimization principles and link building tactics that could provide a good foundation and hopefully, if he does them right, some strong rankings in the search engines. One thing I emphasized is the fact that what ever he does, he needs to build links naturally. A natural link building campaign is crucial for success in SEO.

A natural link building campaign is one that is just that, natural! Getting 50,000 links within the first twenty days of your website’s existence is definitely not natural. Getting a slow trickle of links coming into your website and then building up looks much more natural. Also, getting 50,000 links pointing to your home page with the same anchor text is not natural. Vary your anchor text and include long tail versions of your keywords. You should also build links to other pages of your site in addition to your home page. All of these things help with building a natural link campaign.

In terms of links, there are two types of links you can get for your websites, external and internal links. Both are very important and can make a huge difference in your search engine rankings. I want to discuss in detail, ten ways to effectively jump-start your link building campaign.

Friends & Family Members

When beginning a link building campaign, one very natural way of obtaining links is from friends and family members. I just opened up our family blog and counted all of the friends and family who we have added in our blogroll. The grand total… 41. How hard is it to simply call up (recommended – it’s more personal) or email your family and friends who have blogs or other sites, and ask them for a link to your new website? Not hard at all! In fact, because they are your friends or family members, they will probably do it without hesitation. You can do the same thing with Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc.

Add A Blog To Your Domain

Google loves blogs! Google loves fresh content! Google loves internal links! Internal links from other pages of your website are a guaranteed way to help you increase your rankings in the search engines. Adding a blog to your domain is a great way for you to easily add new content to your website on a regular basis. In most cases, adding a blog to your main domain is rather simple and can be done in as little as three clicks of your mouse. Web hosting companies like myhosting.com, Hostmonster, & Bluehost offer one click installations of blog platforms like Wordpress or b2evolution.

Adding a blog, posting to it at least once daily, and linking back to your home page and other important pages of your website with keyword anchor text is a great way to gain a lot of internal links. When blogging, you should also link out to other websites that interest you and websites that are in similar industries. You might also consider adding images, videos, polls, etc. Mix things up! Make it look natural! Most important, have fun!

Local Organizations

Just about every city in the country has a local chamber of commerce; mine would be the Lehi Area Chamber of Commerce. Joining a chamber of commerce will not only get you a very good link back to your website, but also provides networking opportunities with other local businesses. Most times, depending on your business, you can generate new leads rather easily by getting to know other individuals and businesses in your area.

Local News

Developing relationships with local newspaper writers and always making yourself available for comments on news stories that involve your industry is a great way to build awareness about your company and get links back to your website (if the newspaper is published online).

Help A Non Profit Organization

You would be surprised how many non-profit organizations are operating in your city and your state. Every one of us has been given talents and certain things that we are good at. I guarantee that there is a non-profit organization that could use your help, whether it is with designing their website or painting the conference room of their new office building. If you offer of yourself and your services freely, you can most likely ask for, and get a link to your website from theirs.

Submit Your Site To Local & Industry Specific Online Business Directories

Anyone studying SEO can usually find a blog post about submitting your website to directories on the Internet. Yes, this is a valuable link building tactic, but before you go crazy and start submitting to thousands of directories, seek out local directories and directories that are specific to your business. Submit to these first and take your time filling out all of the information that they ask for. These will be some of your most valuable links since they are so relevant to your website and business.

Social Bookmarking

You have probably heard the term social bookmarking. You have probably heard that social bookmarking is a great way to build links. Well, it is and it isn’t… You can waste a lot of time social bookmarking if you are submitting to the wrong sites. I limit my social bookmarking to Mixx, Propeller and sometimes Kirtsy. The trick to social bookmarking is to not only bookmark your website, your blog posts, and other things related to your website, but bookmarking lots of different things that interest you. This will make your bookmarking profiles look much more natural to both viewers and the search engines.

Write An Article And Submit To Article Directories

Writing articles and submitting them to sites like Ezine Articles, Article City, and Go Articles, also known as article marketing, is a great way to get links back to your website. Take time to write a very detailed article about your industry and submit it to a few article directories like the ones I listed above. You will get links back to your website by properly using the author resource or bio box at the end of the article. You should tell a little about yourself and your company, while adding keyword rich anchor text links pointing back to your website.

Write And Submit A Press Release

Writing press releases and submitting them to places like PR Web or Web Wire is a great way to generate interest and buzz about your business and also to get links back to your website. This method of link building is a little more difficult than other links that you can get for your website. Writing a press release takes skill… a skill, which the average person, like me, does not have. Press releases have certain requirements that must be met, a certain format that must be followed, and in most cases, need to be super interesting. Not having any of these elements can almost guarantee that your press release will either be outright rejected or not distributed to other news related websites.

Build A Hub Page Or Squidoo Lens

Building a Hub Page or Squidoo Lens is a fun way to get links back to your website. To date, I have built 73 Hubs and 25 Lenses for my own personal websites and hundreds for clients that I have managed. The most effective Hub Pages and Squidoo Lenses are those that have at least 450 words of text about a certain topic or subject, videos, pictures, polls, and other gadgets that are easy to add. You want to make the page as interactive as possible so it provides value for anyone who happens to read it. You are allowed two links to other websites from your Hubs and a handful of links (be conservative, don’t spam) from your Lenses.

Building links isn’t pretty. But, in order to rank well in the search engines, it is absolutely necessary. These are ten excellent ways for new companies or new website owners to start building links to their websites.
